Unframed, but here is a link for framing.
A 20"x32" collage and mixed media drawing/painting on black museum board. This concept sketch is from some time around 1991 when I was working on my ”object series“ which included many works dealing with Volkswagen engines. At the time, we owned two VWs, A 1969 type 2 camper bus, and a 1972 Super Beetle, type 1 which called for the engines to be removed multiple times over the years of owning them.
I sketched one of the engines while it was removed and sitting on blocks. The disconnected hoses and connections made me think of a scientific drawing or engraving of a human heart. I was struck by its commonness and history, its fragility, and how this particular motor and types of cars it was installed in, were very exploited.
Our friends were always helping me out with fixes on our cars. I'm not very mechanical, but the simplicity of those vehicles made me think I could occasionally fix things. I recall in 1986, California made seatbelts the law. Our seatbelts were never used in those two vehicles. So for the bug, I got some Datsun 240z salvaged belts, and the bus I was able to make the seatbelts work.
Also, I earned a (very rare for me) "man card" coming home from work one day when a spring broke on my carburetor. I was able to coax the bus into a Home Depot parking lot, so I could go in and find a compatible spring. I didn't have tools in the bus, but was able to install the spring using a can opener from the "kitchen" area.
